SANTA FE, N.M. — Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, the armorer for the film "Rust," has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for her role in the fatal shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of the film in 2021. Gutierrez-Reed was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter last month after a jury trial.
Prosecutors in the case had asked for the maximum sentence of 18 months in prison, while Gutierrez-Reed's defense attorney had asked for probation. Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer ultimately imposed the sentence, saying that Gutierrez-Reed had shown "reckless disregard" for safety on the set of the film.
