Astros Admit to 'Expensive Mistake' with Abreu

Former AL MVP Cut Loose Less Than Halfway Through Contract

Houston Astros have released first baseman José Abreu less than halfway through his three-year, $58.5 million contract. The move comes as a surprise, given the 35-year-old's impressive track record, including an American League MVP award in 2020 with the Chicago White Sox.

According to sources, the Astros have acknowledged that signing Abreu was an "expensive mistake." The team's decision to release him is a clear indication that Abreu was not meeting expectations in Houston.

Abreu signed with the Astros in the offseason after eight seasons with the White Sox. He was expected to provide a power bat and veteran leadership to a young Astros team. However, Abreu struggled to find his footing in Houston, batting just .247 with six home runs in 69 games.

The Astros are now left with a void at first base. The team is expected to explore both internal and external options to fill the position.
